Cut Costs & Boost Resilience for Cold Storage

IceRackTM for Cold Storage Facilities

IceRackTM is Michaels Energy’s thermal energy storage (TES) solution engineered for frozen and refrigerated storage facilities as well as utilities seeking innovative, grid-beneficial management strategies. It reduces peak demand, lowers energy costs, and strengthens grid flexibility — all while maintaining consistent temperature control.

Whether you’re managing a cold storage warehouse, food processing facility, or distribution center, IceRackTM helps you shift refrigeration load to off-peak hours without compromising product safety or uptime.

How It Works

IceRackTM stores cooling energy by freezing water during off-peak hours (typically overnight), then uses that stored energy to reduce refrigeration system loads during expensive peak periods. This shifts energy consumption away from high-cost hours and reduces demand on the grid.

Why IceRackTM for Commercial & Industrial Customers?

Cut Peak Demand Charges

Shift refrigeration and cooling loads to low-cost, off-peak periods.

Lower Operating Costs

Reduce monthly energy spend without changing operations.

Meet Emissions Goals

Support Scope 1 & 2 decarbonization and EUI reduction.

Qualify for Incentives

Tap into utility and state programs that reward load flexibility.

Avoid Disruptions

Maintain temperature reliability, uptime, and product integrity.

IceRackTM Powers Up Food Access in Grand Rapids

In a step toward sustainability and energy resilience, Kids’ Food Basket (KFB) in Grand Rapids, Michigan – in collaboration with Michaels Energy and with a rebate from Consumers Energy – successfully installed IceRackTM in its walk-in freezer. Because of this project, KFB will be able to provide 1,500 more nourishing meals to children in need every year.

“We’re grateful to Michaels Energy and Consumers Energy for helping us on our journey toward sustainability. Their expertise and commitment have been instrumental in helping us reduce our carbon footprint and build a greener future together. This collaboration will not only support our sustainability goals but will allow us to save critical financial resources to better serve our community.” Austin Roelofs – Kids’ Food Basket
