Xcel Energy Building Energy Assessments
Xcel EnergyColorado’s commercial and public buildings play a significant role in the state’s overall energy footprint. With the passing of the state’s “Energy Performance for Buildings” statute (HB21-1286), building owners of facilities 50,000 square feet or larger must meet annual energy benchmarking requirements and performance targets that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 7% by 2026 and 20% by 2030 (relative to 2021 levels).
To support business customers in meeting these new goals, Xcel Energy sought a program implementer that could deliver high-impact, whole-building energy assessments that empower building owners to act. These assessments are designed to serve a wide range of commercial, multifamily, and public buildings, and provide owners with deep technical insight and support.
The Solution
Michaels Energy works closely with Xcel Energy to implement the Building Energy Assessment (BEA) program, designed to guide building owners through a structured energy journey that equips them with the insight and support needed to meet performance targets and realize long-term cost savings.
We supported program development and implementation by:
- Creating a multi-step energy journey to align with BPS compliance and customer readiness
- Delivering ASHRAE Level II-equivalent assessments
- Supporting long-term planning with custom energy roadmaps and expert implementation guidance
- Engaging stakeholders through outreach, education, and ongoing technical support
The BEA program guides building owners through a seamless five-step process:
- Discovery Call (no cost) – Discuss goals, building use, and potential fit
- Proposal Review (no cost) – Review scope, assessment cost, and expected outcomes
- Whole-Building Assessment – On-site/virtual analysis of building systems and usage
- Customized Energy Roadmap – Targeted strategies aligned with BPS requirements and customer goals
- Implementation Support – Guidance on contractor bids, rebates, and next steps
The Results
Michaels Energy implemented a high-quality solution for Xcel Energy that meets regulatory needs while delivering tangible value to customers. Since launch, the program has:
- Supported compliance with HB21-1286 and BPS energy reduction goals
- Delivered custom energy strategies to a wide range of business owners
- Enabled participants to confidently plan and prioritize efficiency upgrades
- Positioned participants for future rebates, incentives, and implementation support
Key customer outcomes include:
- Average identified cost savings: $41,079
- Average energy savings potential: ~230,000 kWh or 15,900 Therms
This program’s success is a testament to our team members, who bring technical depth, strategic insight, and hands-on experience in delivering utility programs that work within evolving policy landscapes. For Xcel Energy, we implemented a program that not only helps customers comply with regulations, but also sets them up for long-term carbon reduction and cost savings.
