Whole-Home Metering Study

Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance

Whole-Home Metering Study

The Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) wanted to go beyond knowing what equipment was in homes — they wanted to know how much energy it used and when.

Michaels Energy partnered with Evergreen Economics to design and implement a whole-home metering study across 400+ homes in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. Using custom packages of eGauges, current transducers, and remote temperature sensors, our team ensured live data was collected, transmitted, and stored for analysis.

Our Contribution

  • Designed metering tool packages and data transfer methods
  • Collaborated with local electricians to install and test equipment
  • Gathered data on usage patterns for equipment types, models, and homes

Impact

  • Delivered actionable data to inform NEEA’s residential efficiency programs
  • Enabled utilities to understand equipment performance under different conditions (pre-, during, and post-pandemic)
  • Provided a foundation leveraged in multiple DOE and statewide studies, as well as campus sub-metering projects
