HCA Healthcare Success

Michaels Energy partnered with HCA Healthcare to uncover major energy savings across facilities in Denver, CO and Wichita, KS by implementing Xcel Energy’s Strategic Energy Management program (implemented by Michaels Energy) and conducting a comprehensive Retro-Commissioning (RCx) and energy study.

Denver: Strategic Energy Management program that saved 11.9M kWh and 3,516 kW across 7 hospitals

Wichita: RCx & Energy Study that delivered 22 improvements, including $203K annual savings from LED upgrades, $138K savings from high-efficiency boilers, and smarter HVAC schedules saving $89K+ per year

The result: A mix of quick wins and capital upgrades that cut costs, improved comfort, and reduced energy use.

Key Findings – Woodlawn Hospital

  • Implementing HVAC schedules will save $25,349/year (234,733 kWh/year)
  • Adjusting the exterior lighting schedules based on the season would save 3,739 kWh/year
  • Converting the air-cooled chiller plant to water-cooled would save $57,896 (or 663,938 kWh/year)
  • Implementing a chilled water reset would save $3,545/year (40,654 kWh/year)

Key Findings – Wesley Medical Center

  • Implementing HVAC schedules will save $64,002/year
  • Replace interior linear fluorescent lights with Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) for savings of $203,882
  • Implementing a static pressure reset will save $87,875/year (391,110 kWh/year)
  • Replace existing boilers with high-efficiency modular steam boilers for savings of $138,999/year (308,886 therms of gas)

Note that Wesley Medical Center is a 1,200,000 square foot facility; about five times the size of the Woodlawn location.
