HCA Healthcare in Denver, CO originally participated in Xcel Energy’s Strategic Energy Management program. Throughout this engagement, Michaels worked with seven of HCA’s facilities throughout Denver.

Due to successfully saving 11,977,079 kWh and 3,516 kW throughout seven facilities, HCA Healthcare was interested in having their facilities in Kansas go through a similar energy-saving process.

Michaels Energy contracted with HCA Healthcare to complete a Retro-commissioning (RCx) & Energy Study at two of their Kansas facilities.

Outcome

The report provided a comprehensive retro-commissioning (RCx) and energy audit of the Wesley Medical Center, with the goal of reducing energy consumption, improving system performance, and identifying cost-effective opportunities for capital improvements. Michaels Energy evaluated a broad range of systems including HVAC, lighting, and building controls, offering 22 Energy Management Improvements (EMIs).

Outcome Was Two Fold!

  1. Identification of numerous low-cost, high-ROI programming changes.
  2. Recommendations for capital investments that would yield significant operational and energy savings.

 Key Findings – Woodlawn Hospital

  1. Implementing HVAC schedules will save $25,349/year (234,733 kWh/year)
  2. Adjusting the exterior lighting schedules based on the season would save 3,739 kWh/year
  3. Converting air-cooled chiller plant to water-cooled would save $57,896 (or 663,938 kWh/year)
  4. Implementing a chilled water reset would save $3,545/year (40,654 kWh/year)

Key Findings – Wesley Medical Center

  1. Implementing HVAC schedules will save $64,002/year
  2. Replace interior linear fluorescent lights with Light emitting diodes (LEDs) for savings of $203,882
  3. Implementing a static pressure reset will save $87,875/year (391,110 kWh/year)
  4. Replace existing boilers with high efficiency modular steam boilers for savings of $138,999/year (308,886 therms of gas)

Note the Wesley Medical Center is a 1,200,000 square foot facility, or as you review the above consider it as five times the size of the Woodlawn location.

Feedback

“Michaels Energy was absolutely amazing in helping us slowly, consistently manage completion dates and find savings in our nine hospitals in two states. We could not have done it without them. Their insight into retrofit projects and savings potential is excellent.”
